‘Proto’ mock-ups approved

The figures for the external artwork, Proto, have been made at full size in MDF at Mike Smith Studio. The male and female figures (brother and sister) stand at 2 meters high, each comprised of 7 two-dimensional anatomical cuts through the body and will be made from 6mm stainless steel. The body shape within the structure becomes apparent as you move around it: from some positions only subtle hints of body parts are visible, from others the whole body can be recognised.

The figures have now been approved and will go into final fabrication, ready for installation early in the new year.

First artwork now installed – PMI windows

A series of window graphics have been installed in PMI, the first of the three artworks to be completed.

Intra…

Across the front windows of the PMI building, a series of ‘portraits’ appear within a complex web of white frosted lines across the glass. The designs can be seen as both abstract and representational. On closer inspection the interweaving lines reveal familiar human forms.

Internal wall piece – work in progress

Test pieces are currently being made for the internal wall pieces.

Meta…

Contour sections are separated from the whole body and laid out flat on the reception wall. The body shapes, not immediately identifiable, are supported by a web of complex geometries engraved into the surface of the metal. These patterns, whilst not directly illustrating specific medical motifs, reference to some of the technological and biological building blocks used in research, simulation and analysis.

Final location decided for external piece

The metal figures will be sited on the grass verge between the PMI and William Harvey Building, with a nice green backdrop.

Outside the PMI building will stand two figures (one male, one female), built in stainless steel from cross sections through the body. Individually the layers make little sense, but when assembled in three dimensions the whole body can be reconfigured, the perspective changing as you pass by and your viewing position changes.
